Predsjednik Joe Biden proglasio je 9. januar nacionalnim danom žalosti za bivšim predsjednikom Jimmyjem Carterom i najavio u ponedjeljak da će svi uredi savezne vlade tog dana biti zatvoreni u znak poštovanja prema 39. predsjedniku SAD-a, koji je umro u nedjelju u 100. godini.

"Pozivam američki narod da se okupi tog dana u svojim bogomoljama, tamo da oda počast uspomeni na predsjednika Jamesa Earla Cartera Jr.", rekao je Biden u zvaničnoj deklaraciji objavljenoj u nedjelju kasno. "Pozivam ljude svijeta koji dijele našu tugu da nam se pridruže u ovom svečanom obilježavanju."

Svečani događaj 9. januara u glavnom gradu nacije okupit će sve žive američke predsjednike i mnoštvo zvanica. Biden je također naredio da se američka zastava vijori na pola koplja 30 dana od datuma Carterove smrti na javnim zgradama, vojnim postajama i zgradama američkih vlada u inostranstvu.

Carterovi posmrtni ostaci će potom biti odneseni u Carterov predsjednički centar na popodnevnu službu. Ondje će počivati do utorka, 7. januara.

U svojoj izjavi kasno u nedjelju, Biden je opisao Cartera kao "čovjeka od karaktera, hrabrosti i saosećanja, čiji ga je životni vijek službe definisao kao jednog od najuticajnijih državnika u našoj istoriji".

Nastavio je: "On je utjelovio najbolje od Amerike: poniznog slugu Boga i naroda. Herojskog šampiona globalnog mira i ljudskih prava, i časnog vođu čija su moralna jasnoća i vizija puna nade podigli našu naciju i promijenili naš svijet."

Kraj, sa Rosalynn

Carterovo posljednje putovanje događa se u Džordžiji, 9. januara popodne. Njegova porodica će održati privatnu službu u matičnoj crkvi Carterovih, Baptističkoj crkvi Maranatha.

A onda će povorka vijugati natrag tim poznatim putevima, do Plainsa, i do niske kuće koju su Carteri izgradili, gdje su odgajali svoju djecu i gdje su se nastanili nakon Bijele kuće. Američka mornarica će izvesti prelet u formaciji prije nego što Carter bude spušten na svoje posljednje počivalište, pored Rosalynn.
